The
mission of Literacy Advance of Houston (LAH) is to teach residents
to read, write, and communicate effectively in English so they can
achieve their full potential as parents, workers, citizens, and
community members.
The student population at LAH is diverse and vibrant.
Literacy Advance of Houston offers two main programs at
no cost, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic
Education (ABE). English as a Second Language students make
up 74% of the student population and are characterized by the fact
that English is not their native language. In contrast, students
of Adult Basic Education, represent native English speakers who
never learned to read or write properly.
