Larry Dierker signed with the Houston Astros in 1964
and pitched for the team until 1976. Dierker remained close to the
Astros organization after retiring in 1977 and in 1979, he was hired
as the Astros' radio and TV commentator. After 18 seasons, Dierker
was named to replace Terry Collins as the team's manager in 1997.
Dierker managed the team for five seasons, won four division titles
and was named National League Manager of the Year after the 1998
season.
Dierker's book This Ain't Brain Surgery: How to
Win the Pennant Without Losing Your Mind recounts his experiences
in professional baseball. Dierker currently serves as the full-time
analyst on Astros home game telecasts.
